Blue Comb

Acrylic on stretched canvas 40 x 60 cm

Inspired by an old family photo, with a fairly generous amount of artistic license. I was playing around with this one, trying to get a good sense of proportion but not being strict with myself about it. Attempting to leave room for happy mistakes. I really like the slightly strange quality of the surroundings in this one, the angles in particular not quite making sense.

I also tried to avoid worrying about likeness or prettiness with this painting. Interestingly I found it most difficult to to this with my own face (that’s me with my hair being combed). I didn’t think I was being precious about it, but when the likeness veered too far off it, it was hard to find what I was looking for. You can tell that this face has the thickest paint, it’s because it has the most layers. This was me painting and re-painting in uncertainty.

I really liked leaning into different colours for each face, and being less concerned with likeness let me avoid being too detailed or fiddly (for the most part!).

Pleased to say I ended up with a painting that I like having on my wall.
